Extraordinary Pension Supplement Announced for Low-Income Retirees in October

by time news

It is already in October that pensioners with the lowest pensions will receive an extraordinary supplement between 100 and 200 euros. The measure was announced by the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, and is expected to cover all pensioners who receive pensions up to 1527.78 euros.

For now, what is known is that the amount of this extraordinary support for pensioners and retirees will depend on the gross monthly amount of each beneficiary’s pension and that it should be paid on October 8, the same date when pensions are paid.

Support ranges between 100 and 200 euros

Those who receive a pension up to 509.26 euros, that is, the equivalent of the social support index (IAS), will receive a extraordinary supplement of 200 euros. Those who receive a pension between 509.27 euros and 1018.52 euros will receive an extraordinary support of 150 euros. Meanwhile, those who receive a pension between 1018.53 euros and 1527.78 euros, three times the value of the IAS, will receive a support of 100 euros. Above that amount, there will be no payment of the supplement.

Additionally, all indications suggest that the amount of the extraordinary supplement will depend on the sum of all pensions that the beneficiary receives. The payment will be made automatically, without any intervention from the pensioner. However, it is still unknown how the supplement will be considered by the Tax Authority.

This extraordinary supplement will be paid only once and it does not constitute an increase in pensions. However, the Prime Minister has already stated that the payment of this extraordinary supplement does not jeopardize the pension increases planned for January 2025 and that the automatic mechanism for pension adjustments will be applied. Thus, the increase in pensions will depend on the inflation and economic growth of the Country in 2024. More information on the data that serve as the basis for pension updates will only be available in November.
