The most likely reason for the holding of early presidential elections in Azerbaijan is the unprecedented strengthening of the legitimacy of the country’s president Aliyev, based on his “victories”, claims Lawrence Breuers, an analyst of the British “Chatham House”, in his publication published on the website of the analytical institution. He emphasizes: “There is no doubt that President Aliyev has ever enjoyed such popularity.”
President Aliyev himself explained the holding of early elections with three main factors. In an interview given to local television stations on January 10, the head of Azerbaijan stated that the victory in Karabakh has started a “new era” in Azerbaijan, elections will be held in Karabakh for the first time in post-Soviet Azerbaijan and these elections will summarize the 20 years of his rule.
