Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in South Africa today, with at least 400 people dead and thousands homeless.

Some parts of the southeastern coastal city of Durban were flooded this week, and roads were cut off, flooding all areas, including homes and hospitals.

Heavy rains in KwaZulu-Natal have already cut off power lines, cut off water services and disrupted operations in the main east coast city of Durban, one of Africa’s busiest ports.

Rescue operations and humanitarian aid are underway in the city of 3.5 million people.

The death toll was 398 until yesterday, with 27 still missing, the government said in a statement.

At least 40,000 people have lost their homes and are suffering without electricity or water. This situation is expected to continue until next week.
