Kyiv: Ukraine has received its first F-16 fighter jet from Western countries. This aircraft was inducted into the Ukrainian Air Force at a secret location, signaling a significant boost to its aerial capabilities. The F-16 is an American-made fighter, but its origin has not been disclosed by Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to the United States, Denmark, and the Netherlands for this crucial aid.
Zelensky Confirms Delivery
President Zelensky confirmed the arrival of the F-16s, stating, “F-16 is in Ukraine. We did it.” He stood beside the jets at a secret ceremony, expressing his appreciation for the support of Denmark, the Netherlands, and the US, who had facilitated the delivery after a 18-month wait. However, Zelensky emphasized the need for more aircraft.
Number of F-16s Received Unclear
The number of F-16s delivered to Ukraine has not been disclosed. While several NATO countries have pledged around 65 F-16s, Zelensky’s statement lacks specifics.
Britain Provides Storm Shadow Missiles
While Britain does not possess F-16s in its air force, it is supplying long-range Storm Shadow missiles that can be equipped on these jets. These missiles will complement other Western-supplied air-to-air missile systems already in use by Ukraine.
Russia’s Threat and Countermeasures
Russia has expressed strong disapproval of the F-16 deliveries, threatening retaliation if these aircraft are used to attack Russian soil. The Russian Defense Ministry has responded by increasing the deployment of fighter aircraft and anti-aircraft weapons in Ukraine.
