Playground Games confirmed that the upcoming Fable reboot features a main story lasting 15 to 20 hours.
Main Quest Length and Content Breakdown in Playground Games’ Reboot
Players diving into the much-anticipated Fable revival will spend roughly 15 to 20 hours completing the primary narrative. Unlike some other RPGs, don’t expect to spend hundreds of hours in Albion unless you’re really interacting with the game’s life sim components. During a group Q&A session attended by Polygon at Gamescom 2026, associate game director Will Kennedy outlined the scope of the upcoming project from Playground Games and Xbox Game Studios. Alongside the main campaign, players can expect another 15 to 20 hours dedicated to side quests and open-world exploration, bringing the focused gameplay total to roughly 40 hours of content in total.
We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay,
associate game director Will Kennedy told Polygon. And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want.
The title marks a major milestone as the first-ever non-racing game for the Forza Horizon developer and the first title in the Fable series to be released on PlayStation consoles. Rumors about the Forza Horizon developer working on a revival of Lionhead’s RPG franchise first started emerging in early 2018. Sure enough, those rumours were proven accurate when Microsoft officially announced the game at its 2020 Xbox Games Showcase, with a CGI trailer. Since its announcement, Microsoft has shown dozens of minutes of gameplay footage from the upcoming RPG, and it’s even provided a release date of February 23, 2027 for the title.
How the New Adventure Compares to Original Trilogies
While an open-world runtime might feel modest compared to massive genre contemporaries—meaning if you’re expecting Fable to be as content-deep as The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, or Red Dead Redemption 2, you’re probably going to end up disappointed—it actually positions the new release as the longest installment in the franchise’s history. Fable 1, 2, and 3 were all around 13 hours long, if you focused solely on their main storylines. Even if you were to complete most of their side content, the games would take up no more than 20 to 30 hours of your time.
Therefore, assuming that the 15 to 20 hours estimate is accurate, the upcoming Fable reboot will be the longest game in the series yet. Not by much, but still long enough to beat the previous record set by Fable 3. The developers stress that the experience is tailored for a focused adventure rather than a hundred-hour time sink, though some fans may be disappointed by Fable’s relatively short length. In response to Kennedy’s answer, someone else in the group Q&A said that Fable is not a huge game,
which caused another associate game director from Playground Games, Craig Littler, to chime in.
“As Will just said, you can literally play it forever if that’s what you want to do,”

Life Simulation Systems and Extended Playtime in Albion
Beyond standard quests, the game’s longevity relies heavily on its systemic sandbox features within the newly rendered world of Albion. Fans who want to spend more time in the Fable reboot’s rendition of Albion will also have the opportunity to interact with the game’s many unique NPCs and life simulation systems. As fellow associate game director Craig Littler put it, you can literally play [the game] forever if that’s what you want to do.

Ultimately, it looks like this will be the kind of RPG that gives back as much as you put into it. If you just want to experience the story and then stop playing, it won’t take you long to complete it. If you’re the kind of player who wants to explore every nook and cranny of this new rendition of Albion and make sure every NPC either loves or hates you, then you’ll be playing Fable for significantly longer. Fable will be released on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X on Feb. 27, 2027.
