Antonio Muñoz: the happy mayor

He has barely been in office for a year and five months, but at this time, some people joke that Antonio Muñoz has a clone due to the number of acts he attends and events he presides over on the same day. The current socialist mayor replaced Juan Espadas as mayor of Seville on January 3, 2022, after the former decided to leave his position to focus fully on his duties as the new general secretary of the PSOE of Andalusia. “We knew he was a good number two, but we were unaware that he was such a good leader,” say his closest advisers about the character displayed by the one who, during the seven years in which Espadas was in charge of the Mayor’s Office, served as a delegate of Urban Habitat, Tourism and Culture -the three heavyweights of Seville’s municipal management-.

As number two, Muñoz placed Seville as the epicenter of international tourism, adding to the cultural and heritage claim, international congresses and major events. As mayor, he has managed to boost both state and regional public investment, to unblock the lack of public investment, getting the works on Line 3 of the Metro to start and work to finish the S-40 to resume. He has also managed to get the Aerospace Agency to come to Seville, a personal endeavor, and has managed to approve the Budgets for 2023 -in an election year- with Cs. For this reason, among other things, he considers himself “a happy mayor”, a statement that he feels, but that it is inevitable to contrast with the profile of his opponent, the PP candidate, José Luis Sanz, who, knowing that in this comparison does not win, he defines himself as “a serious man”.
