Facebook accused Ukrainian of stealing data of 178 million users

The American company Facebook accused a resident of Ukraine of stealing and selling data of 178 million users. The social network has filed a lawsuit against the Ukrainian in a court in the Northern District of California, Business Insider reports.

Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Solonchenko was named the defendant in the claim. He is also known under the pseudonym Solomame, writes TASS. Facebook claims that from January 2018 to September 2019, a Ukrainian gained access to the identification data of accounts and phone numbers of 178 million people. To do this, he allegedly used special software that automatically sent requests to users through the Messenger application.

In May 2021, Mr. Solonchenko, as specified in the lawsuit, sold the obtained data on the online forum Raid Forums. He also posted on the Internet for free the data of 10 million users of the Ukrainian Privatbank and the French analytical company, according to Facebook.

The social network asks for a jury trial, and also expects damages. The amount of the company’s alleged losses was not disclosed in the claim.
