Meta has shared the changes it will introduce in facebook and instagram so that European users can establish a chronological order for stories and reels, in order to comply with the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA).

The Digital Services Law is a set of rules that seeks to establish a safer digital space for European users of online services such as social networks, application stores and content streaming platforms, by protecting their fundamental rights.

Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, recognize which is “one of the most comprehensive Internet regulations”, and states that they have been working since its entry into force in November last year to adapt their process systems to the new requirements.

Some of these works include the restrictions imposed on advertisers in the collection of information from accounts of minor users (between 13 and 17 years old), who since February no longer see advertising based on their activity.

Also the information cards that explain the operation of the artificial intelligence systems in the classification of content on Instagram and Facebook that is then shown in the ‘feed’, reels and stories.

Now, the technology company has announced that European users they will have the option to choose a ‘feed’ that will show in chronological order reverse (from the most recent) the stories and reels of the people they follow, and that it will be available on both social networks, as Clegg explains in a statement.

The changes to accommodate the DSA also affect search results, as there will be the option for them to be based “solely” on the words that users type, “instead of tailoring them specifically based on their past activity and personal interests.” .

Likewise, the tools that allow you to report illegal content, that is, those that violate the community rules, have been rethought so that users can access them more easily. In the event that content is removed, social networks will continue to report the reason and give the option to appeal the decision, but with a wider range of moderation decisions, for example, for violating a local law.

On the other hand, they have also implemented two tools for researchers: the metacontent library and the API, which will give them access to publicly shared content in creator and business accounts on Instagram and in pages, posts, groups and events of Facebook.
