The interns who were supposed to start working at Meta’s offices in London in January 2023, received an email message stating that the company is downsizing, and therefore their internship is cancelled. Many of them rejected other potential specializations and now they are left with no options. “I changed plans and ignored other offers for 2023 following Meta’s offer, so if anyone can help me find something else for next year, I’ll happily apply,” wrote one of the people who was supposed to start the internship, adding: “Sometimes life isn’t fair, and things Unexpected things happen.”

Meta spokeswoman Andrea Beasley said: “Meta’s interns are essential in shaping our future. This difficult decision was taken seriously and was our last resort. The change in hiring was made to make sure that our employment goals are aligned with our highest priority business needs.”

This news comes less than a week after Zuckerberg announced a company-wide hiring freeze, thus warning that Meta should plan its steps carefully in light of the instability in the economy. The company is also making quiet layoffs by moving thousands of workers into a performance improvement program that is seen as the exit door.

Meta unveiled its new office in London during March when Prince Charles visited the site. The internship in London was supposed to start in January, while the internship in the US in California and New York was supposed to be in the summer. Few if any applicants have received offers for internships in the US in 2023 and the future of the program is unclear. The company spokeswoman did not say what the fate of the program was, nor did she clarify how many positions in London were damaged as a result of the cuts.

The stock of Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has fallen for more than half of the year, reducing Zuckerberg’s personal fortune. The cuts are part of an expected decrease in the number of interns Meta has been recruiting around the world in the past year.
