AI content can deceive and manipulate. Instead of deleting them, Meta would rather distribute warnings in the future. This is how freedom of speech should be preserved.

The Facebook group Meta will allow more photos and videos generated or manipulated by artificial intelligence on its platforms. Instead of deleting them, the company wants to add warnings to them.

With this change, Meta follows a recommendation from its independent oversight board, which feared a restriction on freedom of speech. However, the relaxation does not apply to content with hate speech, bullying or misinformation about elections, as the company announced.

Facebook, Instagram and Threads affected

Among other things, Meta wants to label content “Made with AI” based on the files’ metadata. In addition, in-house technology will be used to automatically recognize posts created with AI. The new rules should apply to Facebook, Instagram and the short message service Threads.

Thanks to advances in AI technology, it is becoming easier and easier to use software to create deceptively real-looking images – and now videos. This can also be used to manipulate public opinion. In cases where this risk is particularly great, Meta wants to place additional markings particularly prominently.

The new labels are scheduled to be introduced in May. In July, Meta plans to abandon its previous more restrictive approach to AI content.
