Faced with soaring prices, the French expect salary increases

At the checkout, the basket is not more extensive than usual but the ticket took a few euros. Flour, oil, meat, pasta, fruits and vegetables and toilet paper: prices have soared. Ditto at the pump where, despite the boost of 18 cents granted by the government until the end of July, the bill turns red. And if daily prices are increasing – they have jumped 5.3% in one year according to the latest UFC-Que Choisir barometer – salaries are not progressing. Or not enough, at least, to cope with inflation reaching 4.8% over one year, according to the latest figures published this Friday by INSEE.
