Faced with terrorism, Wauquiez wants facial recognition around high schools

Four days after the knife attack which killed teacher Dominique Bernard in Arras and injured three other people, Laurent Wauquiez wants to see schools better protected. With this in mind, President LR of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is asking to use “facial recognition software” on an experimental basis near high schools in his region to be able to identify people “followed for terrorist radicalization”.

Potential candidate of the right for the Elysée in 2027, he explains in an interview with Parisian Tuesday wanting to “experiment around the high schools in (his) region the use of this software” which, according to him, are among the “technological means (…) which would make it possible to better fight against terrorism”.

Wauquiez assures not to “renounce the values ​​of the Republic”

This system would be put in place “exclusively to detect individuals monitored for terrorist radicalization”, he specifies. Agreeing that “our current law does not allow it”, the President of the region nevertheless assures that he will not “renounce the values ​​of the Republic”, while the act claimed in the name of the Islamic State organization has plunged France back into the fear of jihadist attacks.

Laurent Wauquiez had made the security of high schools one of the flagship measures of his campaign for the 2015 regional elections which he had won, announcing that he would equip establishments with gates which, in fact, were transformed into turnstiles, gates or surveillance cameras.
