Some kind of master monkey swordsman put me between a rock and a hard place, literally
- Notice: This post contains spoilers for Alexander’s side quest in Elden Ring.
FromSoftware has earned my respect over the years, but at the same time there is a significant gap between the things that took up years of my life. Dark Souls and Bloodborne showed me that they can be Machiavellian and cruel, and needless to say, Elden Ring was no exception.
The stories of Alastair, Iron fist, Millicent and Malenia, Miquella’s sword were three stabs on my little heart that I will never forget. And the chiquitarro too, why not say it. Shadow of the Erdtree DLC made me revive them all and the big jar situation was really hard.
You have broken my heart, Software, again
Alexander is considered one of the best friends of the players i Ring of Fire. His story is interesting, although not overly complex: he travels through Middle-earth to face terrible enemies and grow stronger. In fact, he is one of the NPCs you can summon during the fight with Radahn.
I confess that I have grown very fond of Alexander and I have it on good authority that the rest of the community do as well. All the places where he stays with us to talk are full of messages that mark him as a friend. He is a very inspiring person thanks to his warrior spirit and friendly personality.
FromSoftware is an expert at creating rays of hope and then destroying them in the cruelest way possible. Alastair’s quest thread ends in Azula’s Farum and it’s just a duel, because he considers us the strongest enemy. And yes, you must kill him to complete his story. I admit that I shed tears for him, just as I did with Malenia. Miyazaki wasn’t going to let it and she used the DLC to reopen that wound.
The next step in my adventure, after defeating the Divine Beast Lion Dance almost 20 times, he was in Belurat Prison. It is located under the city and I entered through a cave located on the west side of the intermediate lake (there are three according to the map) on the east side of the walls. It is a dungeon full of jars and chiquitarros, many alive and inert, such as Alastair and Bairn (Chiquitarro) respectively.
Cruelty was the maximum. I received many messages from players while moving through the cave: “friend ahead”, “memories of a friend”, “visions of a friend”, “oh friend”, “sadness ahead”, “this sounds aware”, “sorry” and others. It was clear that I was only suffering because of my old friends, Alastair and Bairn.
I’m not going to lie to you: I got a little sad remembering them. I continued to move through the dungeon, killing everything in my way and solving all the secrets. In fact, I got a new jar helmet. It’s like the one worn by Let Me Solo Her, but bigger…much bigger. It’s called Big Jar, in case you’re wondering.
I was absolutely sure that the last boss of the dungeon would be Alexander in the form of spirits, evil version or reborn. But no, it was really crazy: Onze, Master Demihuman Swordsman. It would have sent me to the other neighborhood if not for my Mimic rub. I am sure.
The last thing I expected as I was walking through the palm mist was for some kind of monkey with a magic katana to jump on me. If you think about it, Onze could be perfectly the Yoda of it Ring of Fire. And even though I really liked him, I still think that an evil version of Alexander would have done complete Cruelty to Belurat Prison. Great missed opportunity! I’ll save this one for you from FromSoftware, but thanks for the reference. To be continued…
