Kannur: An unrealistic propaganda is going on on social media in the name of the suicide of a tribal girl in Peravoor who could not bear the hunger. The 15-year-old woman, who had to commit suicide due to starvation, was widely publicized after Kerala gained prominence in the Multidimensional Poverty Index released by the Niti Aayog. The campaign was launched by BJP leader Alphons Kannanthanam’s official Facebook page and several others.

The death of Shrutimol in Peravoor panchayath was widely reported as a suicide due to starvation. But the event that underlined this campaign took place not recently, but in 2016. Shrutimol, daughter of Chengoth Porunnan Ravi and Molly, committed suicide in April 2016. Those who were successful in Pinarayi at that time had responded that it was a suicide due to hunger.

Shrutimol’s father had later told Asianet News that hunger was not the cause of his suicide.

Shrutimol’s father had explained that the boy was upset that he did not buy a bicycle. The police said that the boy had committed suicide due to depression caused by some problems at home. Responding to Alphonse Kannanthanam’s FB post that the suicide was not recent, Alphonse Kannanthanam said that it was irrelevant at what time and that such incidents were happening on a daily basis in all the states of the country.
