Study Shows Link Between Nursing Home Satisfaction and Mortality During COVID-19 Pandemic
A recent study conducted by researchers from Erasmus University Rotterdam has discovered a concerning connection between nursing home satisfaction and mortality rates during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found that nursing homes with lower ratings from residents and their families experienced higher death tolls compared to those with satisfied residents.
One of the significant findings of the study is the influence of external staff hiring and staff absenteeism on mortality rates. Nursing homes that hired a large number of external staff members experienced higher excess mortality rates during the pandemic.
The study also revealed striking differences between healthcare institutions. On average, around 30 percent of nursing home residents pass away within a year under normal circumstances. However, during the pandemic, some nursing homes witnessed a nearly 50 percent increase in mortality rates, while others remained relatively unaffected.
One potential factor contributing to this difference is resident satisfaction, specifically related to facilities such as private rooms and bathrooms. Researchers discovered that nursing homes lacking these essential amenities faced difficulties in adhering to coronavirus guidelines, increasing the risk of virus transmission.
Regarding the link between higher mortality rates and the hiring of external staff, the researchers have not yet determined the exact cause. However, researcher Marlies Bär speculates that care freelancers working in multiple institutions may have contributed to the spread of the virus.
