In 1921, in preparations for the centenary of Brazil’s Independence, the Catholic Circle decided to continue this dream and the engineer Heitor da Silva Costa won the project design competition.
His initial sketch showed an image of Jesus on a pedestal, holding a large cross in his left hand and the globe in his right hand.
In 1923, the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro, whose Archbishop was the future Cardinal Sebastião Leme, promoted Monument Week in order to raise funds for its construction. With the guidance of Bishop Leme, Heitor da Silva Costa improved the project until he achieved the image in which the body of Christ is shaped like a cross with the trunk upright and arms open.
