California: Yannick Sinner, one of the top tennis players, escaped suspension even after being found guilty of using banned anabolic steroids in March. The independent tribunal in its decision believed that Sinner had not done so intentionally and hence he was not suspended. He was stripped of his prize money and points earned in the tournament in California during which he was tested positive for doping.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) gave information about the case on Tuesday. Sinner reached the top spot in the ATP rankings for the first time in June. The 23-year-old Italian player won his first Grand Slam title in the form of the Australian Open in January this year. The presence of low levels of ‘clostebol’ was confirmed in Sinner’s sample during the Indian Wells hard-court tournament in March.

The senior’s sample was found positive twice

It is a banned anabolic steroid that can be used for ophthalmic and dermatological use. Eight days later, Sinner’s sample taken out of competition again tested positive for it. According to the ITIA, Sinner said his test result was because a member of his support team used an over-the-counter spray containing clostebol to treat a small wound.

The ITIA said it had accepted Sinner’s explanation and determined the violation was not intentional. Sinner won the Cincinnati Open title on Monday and will be one of the favourites at the US Open, which begins in New York next week.
