As part of the commemoration of the International Day for the Fight against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Ministry of Public Health developed several activities in the “Reconnect Prevention Week” from June 22 to 26. As a closing of these conferences focused on prevention, an artistic and informative fair was held in the southern government platform.
During the event, various cultural and artistic activities and information stands were presented that addressed issues related to mental health and reproductive sexual health. The objective was to socialize among the attendees the importance of prevention in the field of mental health, the recognition and management of emotions as protective factors, as well as the sexual and reproductive rights of adolescents, the prevention of gender-based violence and construction of new behavior patterns.
The MSP considers it essential to incorporate the gender perspective in prevention policies and programs, recognizing the differences and specific needs in relation to drug use. During the year 2021, 53,609 cares were provided in the services of the Ministry of Public Health for disorders associated with consumption, while in 2022 the figure of 70,062 was reached. In addition, in that same year, our prevention actions reached more than 165,000 beneficiaries, including members of the educational community, health professionals, vulnerable populations, and public and private officials.
The Undersecretary of Health Surveillance, Prevention and Control, Francisco Pérez, highlighted the active participation of all those present and the work carried out at the national level by the MSP during the prevention week. Likewise, he highlighted that the strategy of the “Reconnect” event has generated a very active week in terms of prevention, covering not only the consumption of illicit substances, but also the consumption of socially accepted drugs such as tobacco and alcohol, with special emphasis in the young.
