Do the leaves have to be raked away everywhere?

No. Leaves can remain under trees, bushes and in flower beds. It is good frost protection, provides nutrients to the soil and is a winter quarters for insects or small animals such as hedgehogs.

Leaves should be removed regularly from lawns. Otherwise, if the weather is below 10 degrees and humid, snow mold can form. The circular brown-gray spots with a white border weaken the lawn.

For roses, it is advisable to remove the foliage, otherwise there is a risk of fungal attack.

Can all leaves go in the compost?

No. Leaves from diseased plants are disposed of in the trash can. These include powdery mildew (whitish coating on or under the leaves) or leaf miners (feeding marks on the inside of the leaves).

These leaves can be put on the compost: leaves of maple, birch, linden, beech, alder, ash, rowan, willow, hazel and from fruit trees. These leaves should not be put on the compost: conifers, ginkgo, oak, walnut, horse chestnut, plane tree and Poplar.

If the compost and/or organic waste bin is full, many cities and municipalities also offer leaf bags (some of which are subject to a charge).

When do plant pots have to go into winter quarters?

Tropical plants such as citrus bushes or angel’s trumpet before the first frost. Oleanders, myrtles and rock roses can withstand temperatures down to minus five degrees. Dwarf palms and figs only need to be brought indoors when there is severe frost (from minus ten degrees). Do not fertilize in the winter quarters and only water a little.

Can plants be left outside?

Yes, in mild winters some species (e.g. oleander) can stay on the balcony or terrace. Pack well! Place the bucket on a Styrofoam or wooden plate to prevent ground frost and wrap it with thick foil or coconut mat. Tie branches together and cover with a breathable fleece hood. Store on a wall protected from wind and rain.

What can you plant now for next year?

These plants can be sown well now:

Flower bulbs: tulips, snowdrops, hyacinths, grape hyacinths, daffodils, crocuses, squills, alliums, checkerboard flowers can now be planted in the ground. Plant onions twice as deep as they are tall. Watering is not necessary in late autumn.

Now also replant or relocate hardy perennials (e.g. violets, Christmas roses). This allows them to develop their roots before the first frost. Rule of thumb: Make the hole at least as deep as the edge of the plant’s pot. Perennials should be watered to get established.

Now is also the time to plant trees. Cherry, plum, apple and berry bushes are now in the ground. Make the hole 20 centimeters deeper than the size of the root ball. The same applies here: water.
