Fall race on the best course in the middle of Seoul

The 2024 Seoul Run (SEOUL RACE, co-hosted by Seoul Dong-A Ilbo) will be held on the 13th at 8 am on a course that starts from Sejong-daero in front of Cheonggye Plaza in Seoul, passes through Gwanghwamun, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Blue House, and Sungnyemun Gate and returns to Cheonggyecheon.

Applications for participation in this competition were accepted in June, and it was so popular that the 12,000 applicants were closed in 40 minutes. The site was temporarily down due to the large number of people trying to participate in the competition. The Seoul Run is considered a representative marathon festival in the fall because it allows you to run while feeling the history and present of Seoul. It is divided into a half course that takes pictures of Gyeongbokgung Palace and Sungnyemun Gate and returns to Cheonggyecheon, and an 11km course that goes around Gyeongbokgung Palace and Sungnyemun Gate and runs through Euljiro. The goal location is Mugyo-ro next to Seoul Plaza.

Reflecting the recent trend of young people enjoying running, the ‘2040 generation’ accounted for 95% of all participants. In particular, the female participation rate in this competition was high enough to set the all-time record (1,808) for the number of female participants in the half course. This year, the number of female participants in the half course is almost the same as the number of female participants in the 11km course (1,876). The number of female participants in the half course showed the largest increase last year, increasing by about 30% compared to the previous year, and this year also increased by 28.6% compared to last year. An official from the competition organizing committee explained, “There are an increasing number of female participants who used to run a light 10km course but are now stepping up to the challenge by running the half course.”

The Seoul Run is a competition loved by people of all ages, from teenagers to those in their 70s, with a flat course with almost no hills. In this year’s competition, the oldest participant, Lee Gil-woo (74), and the youngest participant, Jeong Young-woo (12), are scheduled to compete in an urban race together. The number of foreign participants, which was about 80 last year, more than doubled this year.

In this year’s Seoul Run, Dongmacru, who volunteered at last year’s event, is running as a runner for the first time. The competition organizing committee has been operating Dongmacru, a group of volunteer runners, since last year’s competition. They participate in the Seoul Run as volunteers one year and as runners the following year. The 255 Dongmacru members participating as runners in this competition greeted the finishers by attaching storage stickers to the participants’ race numbers, handing them water at the water station, and handing them medals at the finish line, as they did in last year’s competition. Registration for the 610 2024 Dongmacru participants who will run as volunteers for this year’s competition and as runners for next year’s competition closed in just one hour.

Participants should keep this in mind as the storage location for items varies depending on the course. For the 11km course, there is a storage facility at the plaza in front of the Korea Press Center next to Seoul City Hall, and for the half course, there is a storage facility at Seoul Plaza in front of City Hall. Participants must store their personal items by 7:30 a.m. and then proceed to the departure line.
