Fallen, lean UPA | United Progressive Alliance

by time news

NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress leader and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that if the regional parties stand together, it will be a strong alternative to the BJP. Trinamool says Mamata Banerjee will lead the opposition in the 2024 general elections.

Mamata Banerjee, who is seeking a new alternative, says the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) does not exist now. Mamata Banerjee’s claim that the UPA does not exist is technically correct. After the loss of power in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, a coalition called the UPA became inactive. The Congress is now convening the Opposition in the name of a meeting of like-minded parties.

Celebrate the beginning

When formed in 2004, the UPA had more than a dozen parties. Of these, TRS, MDMK, PDP, PMK and AIMIM have long since left the UPA. During the second UPA, Trinamool was part of the UPA for a short time but later left. The DMK, meanwhile, left the UPA but later returned. The National Conference also joined the alliance.

The UPA became inactive with the defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. There are currently eight parties with the Congress-led opposition, but many of them do not want to say they are part of the UPA. The Congress is not trying to label this alliance as UPA. The Left parties remain active in the opposition as a single block. Apart from these, the Trinamool and the Samajwadi Party are standing alone in the opposition. Trinamool does not even attend meetings convened by the Congress. Among those standing alone, TRS supported the Congress-led opposition in the current session.

Although the Aam Aadmi Party is opposed to the Congress, it took part in a meeting convened by the Congress to protest against the suspension of 12 MPs in the Rajya Sabha. MDMK and VCK also have the support of the Opposition. The BSP has maintained its balance with the ruling and opposition parties. Favored the ruling party in various bills.

Mamata’s attempt: CPM

The CPI (M) has said that Mamata Banerjee’s attempt to lead an opposition coalition outside parliament will not succeed. In an interview with People’s Democracy, the party’s mouthpiece, Mamata Banerjee said that Mamata Banerjee’s efforts to lead the Opposition were in vain.

Opposition parties must learn the appropriate lesson from the peasant struggle. In his introductory speech, he said that the peasant struggle was a demonstration of what is possible for continuous and united struggles.
