Fallout 3 and New Vegas Remasters in Development, But Don’t Expect a Quick Release

Bethesda is actively working on remastered versions of the critically acclaimed role-playing games Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, but fans should prepare for a potentially lengthy wait, according to new reports. The project gained momentum following the unexpected success of the Fallout television series on Prime Video, which reignited interest in the franchise.
The news comes after weeks of speculation surrounding a possible re-release of both titles, updated for modern PC and consoles. However, industry insider Jez Corden, reporting via Windows Central, cautions against expectations of an “imminent” launch, dismissing recent rumors and alleged Steam clues as premature. A surprise “shadow drop” appears equally unlikely, particularly with the Xbox Developer Direct showcase approaching and talk of additional unannounced games.
Remaster Rollout: Fallout 3 First, New Vegas to Follow
Corden’s sources indicate that the remasters are not a short-term priority for Bethesda and Microsoft. While specific release windows remain unclear, the current understanding is that Fallout 3 will be released before Fallout: New Vegas.
“The impression is that they will not come out simultaneously: Fallout 3 should arrive first, followed later by New Vegas,” Corden stated. He further suggests that Fallout 3 could potentially arrive before the end of the year, but emphasized this is merely a supposition, lacking concrete confirmation from his sources.
Unexpected Success Complicated Development Timeline
The surge in popularity driven by the Prime Video series reportedly caught Microsoft and Bethesda somewhat off guard. According to Corden, plans for the remasters were initially conceived after the debut of the television show’s first season. In the interim, development teams have been heavily occupied with multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, the Anniversary Edition of Fallout 4 (and subsequent patches), updates – and potentially a PlayStation 5 version – of Starfield, and ongoing content for Fallout 76.
This existing workload has naturally impacted the timeline for the Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remasters, requiring fans to “arm themselves with patience.” The development teams are clearly stretched thin, prioritizing existing commitments before fully dedicating resources to these highly anticipated re-releases.
