France’s ‘Paris Match’ Report
There is criticism that the Korean media’s reporting on BTS member Suga (Min Yoongi), who was booked on charges of driving an electric scooter while intoxicated, has gone too far.
French weekly magazine Paris Match published an article titled “Misinformation and pressure… What’s happening to BTS’ Suga?” on its online edition on the 22nd (local time), expressing concern that Suga has been the target of excessive attention from the Korean media over the past few weeks.
In particular, the media outlet was surprised that some media outlets threatened to make things harder for Suga if he did not stand in the photo line while being questioned by the police.
They pointed out that the articles that were aimed at damaging Suga’s reputation, such as ARMY’s drinking challenge on social media that was confirmed as a rumor, JTBC’s CCTV false report, and the suspension of Suga’s special leave as a social service worker due to Suga that was also confirmed as a false report, were all articles.
Paris Match in particular responded, “It’s hard to understand why reporters are so persistent when Sugar has admitted to driving an electric scooter irresponsibly and no one is denying the dangers of driving an electric scooter in the city.”
Some Korean media outlets are also demanding that Suga leave BTS, trying to figure out if he will be allowed to appear on TV in the future, and asking advertising brands to dump him, but he said it is hard to imagine the team as anything other than seven members.
The K-pop industry has applied the same fate to BTS as older idols who are mired in military service and scandal, abandoned by some fans who are looking for a flawless new face, he said, noting that such a huge incident in Korea goes largely unreported overseas.
Paris Match also asked, “How can Hybe (BTS’s agency) explain to the United States, the birthplace of the star system and scandal, that they had to disband one of the world’s most popular groups because of an article involving an electric scooter with a seat?”
He also emphasized, “BTS’s songs have become the most listened to songs overseas. They are promoting themselves through American TV,” and “There is no way they would abandon Suga, who is needed the most by fans around the world.”
Meanwhile, in January, the Korean media criticized Lee Sun-kyun, who is famous for the movie ‘Parasite’, for being the target of criticism after the tragedy, and pointed out that in the country of ‘flawless stars’, hatred poured out toward him and conspiracy theories were raised in large numbers. The entertainment industry expressed condolences to Lee Sun-kyun and added that they are urging the media and others to investigate the truth.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Suga will appear at the police station this afternoon, 17 days after the drinking incident.
