Hamburg – There are many things that you didn’t know about Karl Lagerfeld († 85). His close confidante, Chanel expert Marietta Andreae, is now betraying her. The Hamburg resident has written a book: “My Privy Councilor Lagerfeld”.
For more than 25 years, the PR entrepreneur accompanied the world-famous fashion designer on trips, interviews, photo shoots and in private life. And just like Karl, the fashion expert doesn’t want to talk about her age – but all the more about Lagerfeld’s anecdotes.
In his favorite bookshop he even bought a whole shop window. “My intellectual delicatessen business” he called “Felix Jud” on Neuen Wall in Hamburg. Marietta Andreae: “He always bought around 50 books, and they served them Zero Cola. Once he said: I find this shop window interesting – I buy everything!” His confidant always had signed Blanco checks with her for this purpose. Lagerfeld not only collected books, but also original posters from the 1910s and 1920s.
He never traveled without a toaster. Why? Andreae: “Because he always ate toast in the morning, but no star hotel, no matter how expensive, was able to get it hot in the room. Karl always brought his special bread from Paris.”
Why he always wore glasses. Andreae: “Karl often said that he had a sad dachshund look. With the sunglasses, he wanted nobody to see it.”
He worked on Germany’s most sinful mile. Andreae: “In 1986 we went to Domenica on Herbertstraße for a photo shoot with a Chanel model. He had met her on the NDR talk show and was enthusiastic. Karl always said of himself: ‘I’m positively curious!'”
He was addicted to dry shampoo. Andreae: “When he was about to turn grey, Karl said: ‘My hair looks like an ugly old cow’s tail’. He quickly came up with the idea of spraying his hair generously with white dry shampoo every day and soon couldn’t do without it. In 1998 the ‘Batiste’ shampoo brand was to be discontinued. I contacted the Henkel company and described Karl’s dilemma. A lab manager confirmed that a new, identical ‘terrycloth dry shampoo’ is emerging. Nothing stood in the way of an order for 3000 cans, Karl was saved.’”
He never had to show his passport at the airport. Andreae: “Karl always came by private plane and always landed at the business aviation center. The customs officers there always said: ‘Mr. Lagerfeld, we know you, you don’t need to show your passport.’ Karl found it so brilliant that he often said: ‘Actually, I should only travel to countries where I am known and I don’t have to show my passport.'”
