Alappuzha: A Nigerian man has been arrested in a case of embezzling Rs 10 lakh from an Alappuzha woman on the pretext of being a pilot in the US. Arinki Ifenna, 36, was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Delhi’s Greater Noida.

He also promised financial assistance of Rs 1.5 crore after promising to marry a former expatriate woman whom he met through a dating app. He told the woman that Rs 1.5 crore in cash had been withheld at the Delhi airport and demanded Rs 10 lakh for the release. On several occasions, the woman paid Rs 10 lakh through her bank account. Another Rs 11 lakh was demanded. The scam came to light when the bank manager informed the police about the suspicion when they went to a city bank to pay for it.

Police, who came to know the whereabouts of the accused, approached his flat in Greater Noida but he got into the car. Sahai, a native of Noida, was arrested by the police. Meanwhile, the accused called Sahai’s phone and asked him to come in front of an ATM counter. This helped the police. Upon reaching here, the accused, realizing the presence of the police, jumped into the 6th lane and ran for about a kilometer. Police followed.

Defendant’s shoe was torn off while running. Defendant was apprehended after failing to stab his foot on the road due to heat in the afternoon. District police chief G Jaidev said he was living in a flat with his Ghanaian wife and two children and had received money from Indian accounts and immediately transferred the money to a Nigerian account. The accused will be produced before the Alappuzha Chief Judicial Magistrate Court today.
