The Prefecture of Chimborazo, through its Productive Development department, last Wednesday, April 3, 2024, led an innovative family garden project throughout the province.

The main purpose of this initiative is to improve the availability of vegetables in homes, thus promoting healthier eating and combating child malnutrition. In the Jesús de Liribamba neighborhood, soon to be inaugurated in the Licán parish of the Riobamba canton, one of these gardens is being implemented in the child development center. Neighborhood residents are working diligently to prepare land that will serve as a garden, growing vegetables to feed the center’s children.

María Págalo, Productive Development technician, explained “the main objective of these gardens is to improve the nutrition of children and families, encourage the consumption of vegetables, balance the family diet and train mothers on adequate nutrition.” Pagalo expressed.

Regarding the crops, Págalo mentioned “that cilantro, beets, carrots, paiteña onion, as well as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and lettuce seedlings will be included to complement.” In addition, he pointed out that the Prefect of Chimborazo has ordered the implementation of 6,000 family gardens in the province, and that interested communities must submit an application to be included in the program.

Mayra Herrera, a resident of the Jesús de Liribamba neighborhood, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting that the food grown in these gardens will be free of chemical fertilizers, thus contributing to a healthier diet for the children of the Child Development Center.
