Experts have warned that reusing wooden chopsticks over long periods of time can be detrimental to your health.

According to Hong Kong media HK01 on the 25th (local time), Tan Dian-chi, a nurse from the Department of Clinical Toxicology at Linkou Chang Gung Hospital in Taiwan, recently appeared on the medical program “Yidian Bukua Jang” (醫點不誇張) and emphasized the importance of washing and replacing wooden chopsticks.

He introduced a case in China in 2013 where a family of four died from liver cancer one after another. The family used moldy wooden chopsticks for a long period of time, which led to the proliferation of aflatoxin, a class 1 carcinogen. Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by mold that grows on grains and nuts. Exposure to aflatoxin can cause growth retardation, developmental delay, liver damage, and liver cancer. It was ultimately investigated that the family developed liver cancer due to long-term consumption of aflatoxin.

Nurse Tandontz said, “If there are cracks or splits in wooden chopsticks, there is a high possibility of mold and other fungi growing, so they must be replaced with new ones.”

He also gave instructions on how to properly care for chopsticks. Bamboo chopsticks have patterns on the top, so you should wash them thoroughly following the patterns.

Melamine or plastic chopsticks are weak to heat and can easily deform, and they can also release substances that are harmful to the liver and kidneys, so it is better not to soak them in hot soups. Nurse Tandontz recommended stainless steel chopsticks, which are strong against heat and do not deform easily.
