Reportedly, children are being sold for daily expenses in Afghanistan, where the economic crisis is raging. Tolo News reported that a family in Balkh province tried to sell a two-year-old girl for food. According to the report, after the incident came to light, the locals gave food and other help to the family. This is not the first time that children have been sold for financial reasons in Afghanistan.

After the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the country is witnessing the worst food crisis in the world. International human rights organizations state that basic facilities are not available to the citizens and there is a severe humanitarian crisis in the country. The World Food Program has raised concerns about Afghanistan’s economic crisis and rising unemployment. According to a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, food insecurity in Afghanistan will reach a record high in 2022.

According to the UN report, the food crisis is affecting 22.8 million people as a result of prolonged drought, civil conflict, political instability and Covid. This is more than half of the population. Government assistance is not available for more than a year. Along with financial crises, natural calamities like earthquakes and floods have also affected the people. Nine out of ten households are unable to meet their food needs.

Afghanistan’s escalating economic crisis has hit small businesses the hardest. Private companies have laid off more than half of their employees due to reduced demand and sales. With the withdrawal of the US, voluntary organizations that were working in the country stopped working, which was a double blow. With the ongoing international sanctions against the Taliban and the freezing of 9.5 billion dollars in American banks belonging to the Afghan central bank, the financial base of the country has completely collapsed.
