Fans and spectators in the stadium – a “vital subsidy business”

FFootball fans in the arenas of the mega-clubs appear more and more like a nice-to-have, they are not a direct profit maker for clubs. How great is the economic importance of spectators in sport anyway? And how badly does the months of abstinence affect clubs, leagues and organizers, which – as has become apparent after the ban on spectators at the Olympic Games in Tokyo – is likely to continue for the time being? Even more: Couldn’t the makers of the mega-clubs even hope to collect more TV and streaming money in the long run without viewers? In short: who still needs fans in the stands?
