“If you buy Hogwarts legacy, you are transphobic. If you think you’re not, you’re stupid and transphobic.”, can we read from a fan of the saga on Twitter. Words like this are popping up by the hundred every day on social networks, as the release date of the next video game inspired by the Harry Potter saga approaches, on February 10. In question, the multiple speeches of the author of the saga, JK Rowling, considered transphobic by the fans.

For several years, the novelist has regularly drawn the wrath of her community of fans with her controversial positions. Among them, the quotation on Twitter of an article from the opinion site Devex, devoted to the creation of a “a more equal world for people who menstruate”. Subtext: transgender women and men. The Harry Potter creator was moved by the article and quipped in another tweet: «“People who menstruate”. I’m sure we had a word for these people before. Someone help me. Women? Do we? Fims?”

The controversy swelled on the Net, to the point that even Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry Potter in the saga, had taken a stand against the author. The actor had notably stated in an essay published on the website of the Trevor Project, an organization dedicated to suicide intervention and prevention for LGBT+ people that “transgender women are women”.

For some fans, buying the video game today means giving money to JK Rowling and therefore encouraging her transphobic speeches. While many are calling for a boycott, many others have announced that they have pre-ordered the game and will play it without qualms.
