FAO recognizes our country as a producer of amaranth

As part of the initiative “One country, one priority product“, the FAO recognized Mexico and its producers for the promotion and intensification of the amaranth cultivation, an ancestral food.

Mexico was one of the three finalist demonstration countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, one of the five regions considered by the FAO, reported the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Since 2020, Agriculture laid the foundations for collaboration to carry out the necessary actions and have the products and inputs that made it possible to achieve FAO designation.

The proposal promotes the sustainable development of agricultural products special with unique qualities and special characteristics associated with geographical locations, agroecological practices and cultural heritage.

Amaranth is the most complete plant-based food and one of the most important sources of proteins, minerals and natural vitamins: A, B, C, B1, B2, B3; folic acid, niacin, calcium, iron, phosphorus and the few with a high presence of amino acids, such as lysine. Chile, Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago were the finalist demonstration countries from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Amaranth production in 2023 recorded a harvest of six thousand tons and represented an increase of 4.8% compared to the previous year.
