The artist who dreamed of the impossible, a representative of Land Art, died at 84 in New York of natural causes. Born in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, he fled to Vienna in 1957. The following year he moved to Paris where he met Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon. The woman becomes not only his wife, but also a workmate: together they sign most of the monumental environmental works of art. Christo and Jeanne-Claude made in 2005 “The gates” in Central Park, the “Umbrellas” in Tokyo and Los Angeles. Then the famous packaging, from the Pont Neuf in Paris to the German parliament in Berlin. With his style that has become unmistakable, in 2016 Christo arrives in Italy and creates “The Floating Piers” on Lake Iseo. The installation built between Sulzano, Montisola and the island of San Paolo was a floating walkway over the lake. This year he was supposed to pack up the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The project was postponed for the pandemic and rescheduled to fall 2021.
