A Fargo animal shelter is celebrating a landmark year for pet adoptions, while together addressing critical space limitations with plans for a important facility upgrade. The Homeward animal Shelter successfully facilitated new homes for 1,500 pets in 2025, an 8% increase from the previous year’s record of 1,386, according to shelter staff.
Surging Adoption Rates Reflect Growing Community Support
The surge in adoptions highlights a growing trend of community members seeking to provide homes for animals in need. according to shelter data, adoptions have risen roughly 58% since 2021 and have more than doubled over the past decade. “I think people are wanting to adopt and wanting to help more so than ever,” stated a senior official at the shelter.
Currently, the shelter provides care for between 180 and 220 animals on a daily basis, with a significant portion residing in foster care. While the physical shelter location at 1201 28th Ave. N.has capacity for 45 animals, the 2,268-square-foot building is consistently at its limit. “Our foster homes are super crucial to us as, without them, we are not able to save the rest of the animals that need us,” explained a shelter representative. “We have a lot of people who are willing to foster, and our foster network continues to grow all the time.”
“matchmakers” Seek Perfect Homes for Rescued Animals
The dedicated staff at Homeward Animal Shelter approach their work with a personalized touch, striving to find the ideal match between each animal and potential adopter. “We want to find that right match and let that animal be their best self and live their best life and really blossom and come out,” one staff member commented. Finalizing an adoption is a deeply rewarding experience, particularly for animals who have waited extended periods for a loving home.”It’s very rewarding when the ones who have waited longer than most are finaly getting their chance at their forever home,” said a marketing director at the shelter.
A New Facility to Address Critical Space Needs
Since opening its doors in the 1960s, Homeward Animal Shelter has helped over 42,000 dogs, cats, and other small animals find permanent homes. However, the current facility is significantly undersized for the community’s needs.Shelter leadership estimates they require approximately three times the existing space.
to address this challenge, Homeward has purchased 5.8 acres of land near the North Dakota Horse Park, with plans to construct a 22,000-square-foot facility. The new shelter will be able to house 28 dogs and 74 cats, more than doubling the current capacity. The project carries an estimated cost of $15 million, with nearly $3 million already raised as of December 23, 2025.
Despite a strong base of support, fundraising efforts are ongoing.”We have amazing supporters in our community, amazing people who are always wanting to help out and give to us, but maybe not to that capacity were those big numbers that we really need to make this new facility happen,” a
