Farmers in the Annuar district of India are feeling the weight of their hard work as the purchase price of their Nendran bananas has sharply declined. With over 2,500 acres of Nendran and Katali bananas cultivated in various areas, it is clear that banana is the main crop in this region.

The majority of these bananas are exported to Kerala, with smaller quantities making their way to Mumbai and abroad. However, the price that traders are willing to pay for these bananas has been steadily decreasing. During the last Onam festival, traders were purchasing Nendran bananas at Rs 36 per kg from plantations. Now, they are only willing to pay 15 to 16 rupees per kg.

According to Dasa Palayam banana farmers, the cost of producing one banana seedling, including labor for planting, fertilizing, weeding, and pesticide spraying, is much higher than the current purchasing price. In addition, traders are deducting two kg for the stem of the banana, further cutting into the farmers’ profits.

This has left the farmers in a state of distress, as they feel that their 11 months of hard work are being devalued. They are calling on the government to set a minimum price for Nendran bananas and establish regulated outlets for purchases. Additionally, they are advocating for technical facilities to be provided to support the export of Nendran bananas.

As the backbone of the agricultural industry in the Annuar region, the plight of these farmers highlights the challenges faced by those working the land. It is clear that action needs to be taken to ensure the sustainability and prosperity of the farming community in this area.
