Farmers in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region have opted for live streaming to sell their produce. In this way, they are selling their specialty products, such as goji berries, lamb and beef, all over China. Sheep are being sold directly from the farm via live streaming. Farmers themselves are increasing their income by selling the produce.

A woman guided the villagers in this work. Chang Xiaohong first started selling sheep from his farm in this way. He sells the family farm’s sheep every day by sending images using a smart phone.

Chang Xiaohong said, ‘When I first did live streaming, I couldn’t even speak clearly. However, in the first attempt I got great pleasure by selling 10 sheep. Sales have been increasing ever since. I can also sell 100, 200, 300 sheep per day. I even sold 800 sheep in one day.’

Residents of Tachanchang Village, Chongning County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region are thus boosting the rural economy by directly selling various products. However, learning live streaming was not easy for Chang. When he first started live streaming four years ago, he couldn’t even form a conversation. However, he realizes that by marketing in this way, sales can be increased.

Inspired by Chang’s success, the 79,000 residents of Tachanchang Town became interested in online commerce. 63 percent of this town is of Hui ethnic group.

Along with mutton, beef, another popular agricultural product here is goji berries. Since 2020, the number of live streamers has increased here. The county’s first social media incubation base was established. Various agricultural products including goji berries are sold through live streaming.

The live streaming craze was sparked by Incubation Base. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding these policies and practices among many farmers. That’s why local Communist Party workers are teaching farmers how to properly live stream.

Yuanfeng Village Party Secretary Li Xingmei. She is an enterprising woman. He said, ‘We conducted a training session. Taught them how to do live streaming. Made aware of public opinion and online reputation. I usually talk about policies in my live streaming, especially the government’s subsidized benefits in rural housing, agriculture and animal husbandry. We started with a few dozen viewers. Now from 30 people it has reached 2 thousand, 3 thousand, even 5 thousand.’

Yuanfeng Village has set up a model through the coordination of live streamers, village cooperatives and farmers, and is assisting in various aspects of product marketing, including trademark registration.

Many village women are benefiting from this. Lin Saixia, a woman from Yuanfeng village, said she earned more than 20,000 yuan in three months through the rural platform.

There are now 113 regular livestreamers in Tachangchang Village, who have generated over 170 million yuan in sales over the past three years and provided employment for over 600 people.
