After much protest and controversy, the Jagan government decided that only one capital was needed for Andhra Pradesh. Amravati is now the only capital. The government reversed an earlier decision to have three capitals. The government informed the High Court about this. The farmers who had given up their land at that time were protesting against the decision to shift the capital from Amravati.

Jagan wanted to make Amravati, Visakhapatnam and Kurnool his capital. But farmers had given away acres of land for the capital. The farmers protested, saying the compensation would not be available if the capital was changed.

Jagan had alleged that the capital was being built in Amravati to benefit realtors associated with former chief minister Chandrababu Naidu. The Naidu government had taken over more than 30,000 acres of agricultural land at that time. Hyderabad will continue to be the common capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till 2024. The first phase of construction of the new capital, Amravati, is expected to be completed at a cost of over Rs 40,000 crore.
