LFor a long time the intestinal microbiome was considered important for digestion. It is – but it affects many other functions of the body as well. For example, researchers are studying how the gut microbiome is related to the immune system and high blood pressure. The focus is on certain intestinal bacteria such as bifidobacteria and the bacterium F. prausnitzii. They feed on fiber that is indigestible for humans and release short-chain fatty acids such as butyric acid, acetic acid and propionic acid or their salts butyrate, acetate and propionate. “These metabolic products are the actual active mediators,” says scientist Dominik Müller.
