Fatal train accident in Egypt that left four dead and 20 injured was due to a technical error by the driver

Four people died and 23 more were injured in a train derailment in Egypt, the country’s Ministry of Health reported on Wednesday.

The derailment took place in the Qalyub station, a city located in the Nile delta, about 15 km north of the capital, ending last Tuesday.

The ministry had given a balance of two dead and 16 injured on Tuesday and on Wednesday announced on Facebook “a final balance of four dead and 23 wounded, distributed among various hospitals”.

Eleven injured were able to return to their homes.

According to the Egyptian National Railway Authority, the conductor took the train “past the finish line” as it entered the station, ignoring a signal that ordered him to stop.

“This caused the derailment of the locomotive and the first car,” he added in a statement.

The photos show rescuers on the locomotive and the first car, which appear to be tilted, near a residential area.

The Ministry of Solidarity announced in a statement that the families of the deceased or injured and totally disabled they will receive 100,000 Egyptian pounds (about 3,000 euros, 3,200 dollars).

Trains are a popular mode of transportation for Egypt’s 105 million people, but the vast rail network in one of Africa’s largest countries is in disrepair and accidents are frequent.
