A massive fire in a multi-story apartment building in the New York Bronx area killed 19 people. The mayor of the city, Eric Adams, confirmed this information in an interview with CNN on Sunday, January 9th. According to him, another 63 people were injured, some are in critical condition. Among the dead – 9 children, said the AP agency, citing an unnamed government official.

About 200 firefighters took part in the fight against the fire. The fire was assigned the fifth, highest, category. The cause of the fire in the 19-storey building remained unknown at the time of publication.

The fire broke out on one of the lower floors, said the head of the New York City Fire Department, Daniel Nigro. The open door contributed to the rapid spread of the flame, he said. Victims were found on every floor, Nigro noted.
