(ANSA) – MILAN, 06 MAY – To recognize and support the role of family caregivers, which is particularly difficult when the patient is a person with cognitive impairment, the Istituto Centro San Giovanni di Dio- Fatebenefratelli, in collaboration with community points of Brescia and the Municipality of Montichiari, offers a month of events, awareness meetings, experiential workshops and training courses in May, all with free access.
In Italy these informal assistants – the hospital body recalls – on which the well-being of the fragile person and our welfare system depends are 12.7 million (2018 data), between 18 and 64 years old, i.e. equal to 34.6% of the population: they look after children under 15 or sick relatives, the disabled, the elderly, fragile people often suffering from a chronic debilitating disease, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Among the employed, almost 40% of 18-64 year olds carry out these activities. They are mainly women, between 45 and 55 years old, and often also work outside the home; in 60% of cases they are forced to leave it.
They have no legal protection.
They define themselves as “informal caregivers” – it is underlined – because they do not receive any compensation and take care of the physical, mental and care needs, making their time and energy available. But – this is the theme of the Fatebenefratelli – who takes care of the needs of caregivers, from informational-educational ones to financial-work-related ones, to emotional-affective ones? Who avoids burnout? (HANDLE).
