In Dalton, Illinois, USA, the incident in which a 3-year-old son shot and killed his mother in an accident last Saturday evening has caused a stir.
On the day of the incident, a woman, Deeja Bennett (22 years old), had finished shopping and left her son in the back seat of the car as he sat in the driver’s seat and prepared to drive the car.
The boy then accidentally blew himself up while playing with his father’s gun in the back seat of the car. Bennett, who was sitting in the front seat of the car, was killed when a bomb exploded in his back.
He was immediately taken to the nearby University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment. But doctors said he had already died.
The boy’s father, Romal Watson, 23, was charged and arrested by police in connection with the incident. Police said he illegally carried the gun in the car in an unsafe manner.
We have been giving psychiatric counseling to that child and his family to recover from this traumatic event. A Dalton police officer said life had changed in an instant.
Between 2015 and 2021, 2,070 children were accidentally shot in the United States, resulting in 765 deaths. It is noteworthy that in 90% of cases children are also victims of gunfire.
