Kim Han-gyu, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, recently criticized the medical vacuum caused by the prolonged political conflict, saying that his father passed away without receiving treatment due to ’emergency room hopping.’

On the 27th, Rep. Kim appeared on YTN’s ‘News On’ and mentioned his father while talking with Rep. Kim Yong-tae of the People Power Party about ‘measures to resolve the conflict between the legislature and the government.’

At the time, Rep. Kim said, “My father was taken to the emergency room, but he couldn’t be admitted because there were no beds, so he went around in circles and passed away last week.” He added, “After going through that situation once, I am incredibly angry (at the government for neglecting the political conflict).”

He said, “It seems like (the government) is being unnecessarily stubborn,” and “The government should create a consultative body including the residents who are currently on strike, and actively engage in discussions. If this situation continues, the medical school system could completely collapse.”

The news of Rep. Kim’s father’s passing was reported on the 13th. Rep. Kim’s father is known to be an otolaryngologist who has been running a hospital in Jeju City for a long time.

Congressman Kim also revealed a photo he took with his father on his Facebook page, saying, “The 50 years I spent with my father, especially the last week we spent together at the hospital, were so happy. I miss him so much already. I love you, my father.”

Former People Power Party Emergency Response Committee Chairman Kim Jong-in also shared his experience of falling in the early morning and injuring his forehead badly in an interview with CBS Radio on the 22nd, but was turned away from 22 emergency rooms.

He warned, “There is concern that the medical crisis surrounding the recent increase in medical school admissions could cause considerable damage to the medical system,” and “If this collapses, I think it will be difficult to maintain the government itself.”

The conflict between medical residents and medical school students, which began with a series of mass resignations in protest against the increase in the number of medical school admissions, is now in its sixth month. It has been reported that there are even claims on the ground that the emergency medical system is on the verge of collapse.

In particular, as the Chuseok holiday approaches, when the number of outpatients is expected to increase more rapidly than usual, the government plans to designate the two weeks before and after the Chuseok holiday (September 11-25) as the ‘Chuseok Holiday Emergency Response Week’ and provide intensive support for emergency medical care.
