The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced the completion of an operation codenamed Medusa, which was aimed at eliminating a global peer-to-peer network of computers infected with Turla Snake malware. According to the FBI, a division of the 16th center of the FSB of Russia used this software for cyber espionage.

“Operation MEDUSA disabled the Turla Snake malware on compromised computers using the FBI-created PERSEUS tool, which issued commands that caused the Snake malware to overwrite its vital components,” according to a release on website US Department of Justice.

According to the FBI, the investigation into the use of malware lasted for 20 years: during this time, the malware was updated and modified many times. It was used to steal data from devices from 50 countries around the world, including NATO countries, as well as journalists’ devices.

According to the FBI, the malware installs a keylogger on the device that logs various user actions, such as keystrokes on a computer keyboard, mouse movements, and clicks. Thus, the software could steal credentials, usernames and passwords.

The FBI cybersecurity experts have also issued advisories with detailed technical information about the malware, which will allow specialists to detect and eliminate it.
