A Guatemalan, identified as Roberto Montano Pellegrini57, was arrested by the FBI for wire fraud through a complaint in 2015 and an indictment in 2021 by the District of New Hampshire.
It’s news. Montano was arrested Wednesday at Miami International Airport. According to charging documents, Montano is originally from Guatemala and managed two forestry projects in the country for a New Hampshire-based investment advisor between 2007 and 2014.
In late 2009, Montano’s management company, Green Millennium, allegedly misappropriated funds from the projects by diverting cash and concealing the diversions using altered bank and financial statements. Also by mortgaging the properties of the projects without authorization and investing the profits in commercial projects. He is also accused of stealing forestry subsidies paid by the Guatemalan government.
The data. Montano was alerted to the investigation and fled the United States to Guatemala. He then moved to Nicaragua, where he lived for several years under an alias and was eventually captured in Miami.
The Guatemalan faces a prison sentence of up to 20 years and a fine of up to US$250,000 or double the amount stolen.
Historical fisgón. For years, the Guatemalan prosecutor’s office has had a case against Montano, whom it accuses of money laundering and illicit association, since it is presumed that he would have used his influence to obtain up to US$15 million in an anomalous manner.
Montano managed the largest teak tree plantation in the world, totaling about 300 caballerías in the municipality of La Libertad, Petén.
