FBI Joins Investigation into Former Michigan Football Coach Matt Weiss

October 26, 2023

The FBI has recently become involved in the investigation of former University of Michigan Wolverines assistant football coach, Matt Weiss. Weiss was fired in January after allegations of unauthorized computer access crimes at the school’s football building surfaced.

Deputy Chief Melissa Overton confirmed the FBI’s involvement in an interview with ESPN, stating that the investigation is currently ongoing and covers multiple states. Overton emphasized that the case is of utmost priority.

Despite the investigation, Weiss has not been charged with any crimes. In a letter obtained by the Associated Press, Michigan executive associate athletic director Doug Gnodtke informed Weiss that the school had evidence of his “inappropriately accessed” accounts at Schembechler Hall, where the football offices are located.

According to the University of Michigan police log, a Michigan employee reported “fraudulent activity involving someone accessing university email accounts without authorization” on January 5. The school fired Weiss after he failed to attend a meeting to discuss the alleged unauthorized account access.

In a statement to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Weiss expressed his willingness to cooperate with the investigation.

It is important to note that the investigation into Weiss is unrelated to the NCAA’s probe of off-campus scouting and signal stealing involving another staff member, Connor Stalions. Stalions was affiliated with the program in 2021 before officially joining the staff in 2022.

The addition of the FBI to this investigation raises the stakes and shows the seriousness with which the authorities are handling this case. As the investigation continues, further details may emerge regarding Weiss’s alleged unauthorized computer access crimes.
