The dispute over Dani Olmo continues to degenerate. The ex-Leipzig player will not receive a gaming license for good. His club is now drawing the consequences.
FC Barcelona has suffered another setback in the ongoing dispute over Dani Olmo’s eligibility to play. As the Spanish football association RFEF and the league decided on Saturday, the Catalans’ renewed application for a license for the 26-year-old European champion will not be approved. This means that Olmo, like Pau Víctor, is not eligible to play for coach Hansi Flick’s team.
The club reacted immediately and announced that it would appeal the decision to the national sports council CSD. Club president Joan Laporta had already sought talks with Olmo and Víctor to calm the players down, it was said. There will be no further comments from the club on this topic.
The Spanish association had previously stated that although Barcelona had met the economic requirements for an extension of the cost limit, the final license could not be issued due to a violation of the rules. According to RFEF regulations, a player whose license has been revoked is prohibited from obtaining a new license for the same team in the same season.
Olmo moved from Leipzig to Barcelona last summer. The Spanish top club paid 55 million euros for him. But even then there were difficulties with registration because the club had to meet the league’s fair play requirements. Olmo, whose market value is estimated at 60 million euros, could now move on a free transfer but would still be entitled to his salary.
In the first half of the season, Olmo played in 15 games for Barça. He scored six goals and prepared another.
