In the men’s category, FC Bayern had nothing to do with the Supercup this year. In the women’s category, however, they did – and successfully.

Champions Bayern Munich have won the new edition of the Women’s Supercup and celebrated their first title of the season with victory in the prestigious duel against DFB Cup winners VfL Wolfsburg. One week before the start of the Bundesliga, coach Alexander Straus’ team won 1-0 (1-0) in Dresden’s Rudolf Harbig Stadium and made an early statement in the important benchmark of preparation.

In front of the eyes of DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and the new national coach Christian Wück, national player Klara Bühl (9th) secured the success with her goal, which could have been even greater in front of 16,690 spectators.

“That’s a good way to start the season,” said goalscorer Bühl happily to MagentaSport: “I’m very proud of the team. We could have scored two or three more goals.” The Wolves also took positive aspects from the match. “We’re disappointed right now, but we know that we can at least keep up with Bayern,” explained Svenja Huth.

The last time the Women’s Supercup took place was in 1997. Accordingly, DFB boss Neuendorf saw the revival of the competition as an important sign. “After 27 years, the Supercup is being revived. We are thereby contributing to the visibility of women’s football,” Neuendorf said before the start of the game. “We notice how women’s football is gaining popularity.”

The teams, meanwhile, did not want to overestimate the sporting value of the duel. They would like to take the title with them, as there is still room for a trophy in the museum, said Bayern Munich’s women’s director Bianca Rech: “But the main focus is on the start of the season next week.”
