FC Pain Limit: Martel & Thielmann’s Impossible Breakthrough

by Ethan Brooks

1. FC Köln faces a contract standoff with midfielder Eric Martel, whose deal expires in 2026.

Young stars who recently impressed at the European Championships are now integrating into 1. FC Köln’s pre-season training in Bad Waltersdorf, Austria. Among them are Said El Mala (18), whose U19 DFB team narrowly lost 5:6 to Spain in the semifinals, and Eric Martel and Jan Thielmann (23), who reached the U21 final, falling 2:3 to England. The team also welcomes Sebastian Sebulonson (25) as a new addition.

Martel’s Contract Stalemate Creates Uncertainty

Trainer Lukas Kwasniok is enthusiastic about the new energy in the squad. “It’s great that the Sebulonson transfer worked out,” he said. “It makes integration much easier. A hierarchy naturally forms and changes from last season. Some are fighting for their spot, others want to keep it.”

Kwasniok sees the desired drive in the DFB talents: “Energy, energy, hunger! They just love football. That’s the ticket in. I’ve told them that. You can be the best swimmer, but if you don’t pay your entry fee, you can’t get in the pool.” He emphasizes that readiness and hunger are non-negotiable entry requirements.

However, Martel’s future leadership role remains uncertain. The club is keen to avoid him entering the final year of his contract without an extension, and Martel is reportedly unwilling to sign beyond 2026.

The situation appears stalled. 1. FC Köln is awaiting concrete offers for Martel, with a price floor in place. A bid around 10 million euros could prompt the club to sell the versatile defensive player. Conversely, an offer of 4 million euros might lead them to retain him.

Did you know? Eric Martel recently had to cut short a training session due to back pain, adding another layer of concern for the club.

The club must carefully weigh any offers. Keeping Martel in top form significantly boosts 1. FC Köln’s chances of staying in the league. The worst-case scenario for the club would be losing him on a free transfer in the summer of 2026.

Kwasniok’s optimism faced a setback on Sunday when Martel withdrew from training with back issues. Martel’s contract, like Thielmann’s, also expires in 2026. However, there is more confidence that Thielmann will extend his stay with the club long-term, mirroring Said El Mala’s commitment.
