The FC Porto team and fans present at the Busoil stadium saw their exit from the venue delayed, after the final whistle, after a group of Royal Antwerp fans – 20, according to the Belgian press – tried to invade the stand intended for the Porto fans, forcing police intervention.
In the first instance, police intervention, with the use of a water cannon – see video below – against the Belgian ultras inside the stadium resolved the issue, but it ended up dragging on.
The Belgian police were forced to try to disperse this group of around two dozen fans, who were concentrated in a roundabout near the stadium, in the following minutes and this delayed the departure of the Porto fans and delegation.
It was already after 11pm in mainland Portugal, midnight in Belgium, when the police gave the order and permission for the Porto fans to continue their journey to the buses, with the Porto team only being allowed to leave the sports venue under strong police escort.
