Winterthur – Basel 1:3

FC Basel is still going strong. Coach Fabio Celestini’s team won 3-1 away in Winterthur in the 21st round of the Super League and celebrated their second win in a row.

The match winner for FCB was, of all people, Thierno Barry. The 21-year-old Frenchman has often cut an unhappy figure since his move to the Rhine knee and has failed to score in his 18 games for Basel so far, but he scored twice in Winterthur.

In the 13th minute, Barry scored to give Basel the lead. After a long ball from Finn van Breemen, he benefited from an inadequate attempt to clear the ball by Granit Lekaj. Around 20 minutes before the end he made the supposed preliminary decision after a rebound from Winterthur’s Marvin Keller.

At this point there were only nine of the Winterthur team left on the pitch. Shortly after the break, within just three minutes, Lekaj (he received his second yellow card for complaining) and Randy Schneider were sent off.

The home team fought back as best they could and even scored ten minutes before the end through Loïc Lüthi. Renato Veiga’s goal in the second minute of stoppage time snuffed out any hope the home fans had of winning a point.

Young Boys – Yverdon 5:1

The Young Boys won 5-1 against Yverdon in the 21st round of the Super League in front of their home crowd. In the end the result is too high as the game was open for a long time.

Within ten minutes, the champions corrected the false start against the newly promoted team. First Donat Rrudhani scored powerfully after some great interaction with Filip Ugrinic. Then, shortly before the break, Cédric Itten headed a cross from Sandro Lauper into the net via the underside of the crossbar. For the 27-year-old striker, who only made his comeback after a long foot injury at the weekend, it was the fifth goal of the season, the first since the beginning of October.

A quarter of an hour before the end, Joel Monteiro made the decision with a remarkable 3-1. Both teams had previously suffered one hit from aluminum. First Filip Ugrinic’s direct free kick failed to hit the post, then Kevin Carlos’ header missed the equalizer by just centimeters. It would have been his second goal.

The 22-year-old Spaniard gave the unruly guests an undeserved lead after ten minutes. He benefited from a mistake in the Bernese build-up game, prevailed against Loris Benito in a running duel and hit the short corner with a powerful shot. Anthony Racioppi, who was guarding the Young Boys’ goal in place of the injured David von Ballmoos, was still there but could not prevent the impact. In the final phase, Monteiro and Sandro Lauper again ensured the final score.
